About Us

History

Our chapter is named for Reading Blount who was a major in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. In 1796, Reading Blount and his wife, Lucy Harvey Blount, the granddaughter of North Carolina’s Governor Thomas Harvey, purchased 300 acres on Tranter’s Creek in Beaufort County and named it Bellefont. Blount was a highly decorated veteran of the American Revolutionary War. He was only 19 when the war broke out and served for the next five years in the local militia in North Carolina. In 1781, he was transferred to the Continental Army and would later be recognized for his bravery at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.

Lida Tunstall Rodman transferred from the Miles Harvey Chapter, NSDAR, in Tarboro, North Carolina, and became the organizing regent of the Major Reading Blount Chapter, NSDAR. The chapter was established in 1910. In 1914, Miss Lida Rodman was elected state regent of the North Carolina State Society, NSDAR and served until 1916.
